The Need is Great

Lunchtime is so important to each student and teacher. It's a time to take a break from the rigors of school-work, catch up with friends, and nourish the body. Our current facilities simply no longer meet the needs and standards of our campus. We have been working with the Siddhartha School board of directors in Ladakh to draw up the plans you see here. With your help, we will sponsor the construction of a new kitchen/dining hall that provides for the growing needs of our teachers and students.

Housed in what used to be the student dormitory building, the current dining hall can seat 70 students and teachers. But the space is small, and so the lunch break is loud and cramped. With a hardened dirt floor and a deteriorating ceiling, the overall state of the building is poor.

The current kitchen is clean and practical, but with no frills. The open-gas fires that heat the food are unventilated. A seven-foot concrete slab is the only countertop, and there is very little room for storage. Admirably, our 2 intrepid cooks are able to prepare meals for 60 dormitory students and 10 teachers each day, but it is time for an improvement.

This new kitchen/dining hall has been designed with the needs of the Siddhartha School in mind: Nearly doubled the main dining area--60' x 24'; 96 student seats; 2 handwashing stations; Improved kitchen with increased storage; Staff bathroom; Visitor dining area
