WAC GLOBAL CLASSROOM EVENT ON LADAKH

Learning from Ladakh: Development, Sustainability, and Quality of Life in the Himalayas

February 13 @ 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM
Hillman City Collaboratory • 5623 Rainier Avenue South • Seattle, WA

Join Global Classroom and our partners, Global Family Travels and Center for Global Studies at the University of Washington, for an engaging workshop on development, sustainability, and cross-cultural exchange featuring Ladakh, India. Located in the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh is a Himalayan region rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture experiencing economic and social change. Ben Wheeler, a history teacher at the Bush School in Seattle, will facilitate a discussion and activities based on the documentary, “Learning from Ladakh,” and share an overview of his upcoming school trip to Ladakh.

PHOTO: The rapidly developing city of Leh, Ladakh faces many challenges as people leave their villages for the city. Leh is just twenty-five minutes from Siddhartha School.

As part of this cross-cultural exchange, students and teachers from The Bush School and Siddhartha School in Ladakh are participating in the Heroes Elevate Empathy Project. Students reflected on the question: Who is your hero? Then, they created portraits and wrote about their personal heroes. See portraits from the project and learn how to incorporate this collaborative, cross-cultural activity into your curriculum. In addition, Global Classroom staff will provide and share their resource guide on cross-cultural exchange opportunities for students, teachers, and schools.

There will be an additional 1/2 hour online component for educators wishing to receive clock hours. Cost includes 3 free clock hours, light dinner, and teaching materials
